Palm Springs Divorce and Family Law Attorney
Michael C. Peterson Passes the 2013
Certified Family Law Specialist's Examination!!!
We are so very proud and pleased to announce that Arnold Law Offices' Team Member Michael C. Peterson received notice today from the California State Bar that he successfully passed the 2013 Certified Family Law Specialists Examination!
The legal specialists certification is for lawyers what 'board certification' is for doctors. The first, and most arduous, step in gaining this prestigious accreditation is successfully undertaking what is the equivalent of a second Bar Examination, except that the level of sophistication and complexity of the written test is way more challenging that merely becoming licensed to practice general law. Conventional wisdom has it that, in order to make the grade, between 200 to 400 hours of intensive study time is required. Most attorneys first also take a 33 plus hour advanced family law course of study put on by The Rutter Group (Thomson Reuters), which is offered every other year. This includes actually reading more reported appellate court cases than you'd want to imagine, not to mention over 400 family law statutes and court rules, and putting all of the information together into a framework that can be applied to the myriad of circumstances that divorce and family law practitioners encounter with each new client who brings their issues and concerns through our doors.
The study and the examination are the hardest part, but by themselves are not enough to gain admission to this elite group: In order to become certified, a family law legal professional must also meet rigorous ethical, experience, and trial practice standards and must also be recommended by judges and their peers. Mr. Peterson took the exam in September and waited almost seven months to learn he'd passed, and now must submit another round of documentation so that his professional expertise can be closely examined before he is entitled to call himself a "Certified Family Law Specialist" and this is anticipated to take another six months or more for the State Bar to process.
